Belfast has more roofs pointing in more directions than anywhere else in Northern Ireland: red-brick terraces off the Lisburn and Ormeau roads, 1930s semis in Cregagh and Finaghy, bungalows in Glengormley, apartments down the Lagan. We have fitted solar on all of them. EECO Energy is based 25 minutes away in Newtownards, and Belfast is where most of our vans are on any given week.
This page is for Belfast homeowners who want to know what solar actually looks like on a city house, what the grid connection involves here, and whether planning is a problem. If you would rather just talk to someone, the form at the bottom of this page gets you a free survey.
Terraces and split roofs. A typical Belfast terrace or semi has one main pitch facing the street and one facing the yard. Only one of those will face anywhere near south, and the other often faces north-east. We design around it: panels on the best pitch, sometimes a second string on a rear extension or a flat-roof frame, and an inverter sized for the real output rather than a brochure figure. A 10-panel system on a decent south or west-facing Belfast roof still covers most of a household's daytime use.
Slate roofs and chimneys. Victorian and Edwardian houses in South and East Belfast usually have natural slate, which needs slate hooks rather than tile brackets, and more care underfoot. Chimneys, dormers and neighbours' extensions throw shade that moves through the day, so we use optimisers or a string layout that keeps one shaded panel from pulling the rest down.
Planning. Rooftop solar on a house is permitted development in Northern Ireland, so most Belfast homes need no application at all. Listed buildings always need consent. In the city's conservation areas (Malone, parts of the Queen's quarter, Cyprus Avenue and a few others) panels on a roof facing the road usually need an application to Belfast City Council too. We check your address before we quote and tell you which side of that line you are on.
The grid connection. Belfast is served by NIE Networks like the rest of NI. A standard home system up to 3.68kW per phase can be connected with a notification after the fact; anything larger, including most battery and Tesla Powerwall installs, needs an application approved first. We submit it, chase it, and do not book your install date until it is back.
Parking and access. Narrow streets and permit parking in areas like the Holylands and Stranmillis need a bit of planning for scaffolding and the van. We sort that in advance so install day is not a neighbour dispute.
LONGi, JA Solar and Canadian Solar panels with Solis or Tesla inverters. Tesla Powerwall 3, Dyness and Soluna batteries sized from your bills. Solar-aware EV chargers, hot-water diverters and maintenance on systems we fitted and systems we did not.
All of BT1 to BT17 and the Greater Belfast fringe: Andersonstown, Ballyhackamore, Belmont, Cavehill, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Dundonald, Dunmurry, Finaghy, Fortwilliam, Glengormley, Holywood, Knock, Malone, Newtownbreda, Ormeau, Stranmillis, Sydenham, Whiteabbey and Whiterock. If you are inside the outer ring road you are a short trip for us.
We have customers right across the city, from terraces in the Holylands to detached homes in Belmont and Malone. If you want to speak to someone near you who has had a system fitted, ask and we will put you in touch. Project write-ups for individual Belfast installs are being added to this page as customers give us the go-ahead.

We are really pleased with the advice given to us by Philip Wilson on choice of the solar energy system that would be most advantageous to our needs. The installation of the panels and battery etc were carried out very efficiently and aftercare advice and support has been excellent.Posted on Google

Great support from Phillip who gave us the information we needed to decide on the system that worked best for us and for making sure the installation was a neat and tidy job. We are very pleased with how ECCO managed the process from our decision to installation and the aftercare they provide.Posted on Google

I was looking for ways of bringing down the cost of my electricity. My standing order of £90 plus per month and heading upwards. I contacted a number of companies for quotes including EECO where I met Philip Wilson who took time taking me through the whole process and what I could achieve by investing in solar. I decided EECO was my company of choice. Philip and his team took us through the complete process, and dealing effectively with any problems which arose which were minor. . My direct debit has gone from £95 to £69 a month in 1.5 months. I also have credit with my electricity supplier. That’s a result of. Philip is always available for advice. Wish I had done it sooner. I have not obtained any incentive by EECO this my true thoughts on Solar and EECOPosted on Google

Absolutely delighted with the service from EECO Energy from start to finish. A special mention to Simon Trainor, our client liaison, who was first class throughout. He was extremely responsive, explained everything clearly and continues to quickly answer any questions we have. From confirming the system, the full installation was completed within two weeks, which was brilliant. The roofing team and electricians arrived when they said they would and made sure everything was installed neatly and discreet. We shopped around beforehand and EECO also offered the best price for the system we wanted. The solar and battery combination has been brilliant. We're now at the point where, even on an overcast day, the house is basically running for free from the solar and stored battery power. Great price, professional installation and, most importantly, excellent service before and after the job. Would happily recommend EECO Energy.Posted on Google

Staff are great, big thanks to Simon and Deione, they guided me through the process, helped in every way, a 100% trustworthy company. Installation neat and tidy, roofers A+ electrical install again A+, after service excellent, just lift the phone and like Mr Ben they just pop out of nowhere to answer any queries. Biggest mistake should’ve did it 6 years ago.Posted on Google

EECO Energy recently completed a solar PV and battery installation at our home in Lisburn, and we couldn’t be happier. The roofing and electrical teams were skilled, tidy, and clearly took pride in their work. From the first conversation with Stuart, to the installation, the customer service was consistently excellent. The whole process was smooth, well‑explained, and professionally delivered. We’d happily recommend EECO Energy to anyone looking for a reliable solar installer.Posted on Google

Just had 11.7kw of Panels with a 16kw battery installed by Eeco Energy. It's been a great experience. Simon took the time to call out and spent almost 3 hours explaining not only the process, but the benefits of what he felt was the right amount of kit for our needs, which was to be as close to off grid as possible. The Solar panels (26) went up without any issues last Tuesday and on Thursday the electricians came and installed the battery, inverter and Iboost for the hot water. All the installers were friendly and courteous doing a swift and efficient install and keeping me informed of what they were doing throughout the day. When it first went live, and for a brief period, the app showed a solar generation of 11,500watts from an 11,700 watt array! In the 3 days since, we have drawn virtually no electric from the grid, but sold energy back ( although waiting for our G99 application for electricity buyback to complete). We have our house running on solar, the battery fully charged by midday, and the hot water tank full after a few hours. At night, the battery has been powering the whole house, and we have seen 39% to 40% battery remaining in the morning as solar kicks in and starts the process over again. So far very happy and excited to see how it performs over an extended period, but I have every confidence in the install. Simon has been very quick to respond to queries afterwards as well. Highly recommended.Posted on Google

Fantastic service from start to finish, Stuart was excellent on giving all the information needed, the job was completed 4 days after we paid the deposit, both the panel installation team and electricians were great and the standard of workmanship was outstanding.
Not for most houses. Rooftop solar is permitted development in Northern Ireland provided the panels sit close to the roof surface and do not project above the ridge. If your home is listed you need consent first, and in a conservation area a road-facing roof usually needs an application to Belfast City Council. We check this for every Belfast address before quoting.
Usually yes. A south-facing pitch is the best case in NI. If your south pitch is small we look at the rear, a flat-roof extension, or a garage. We will tell you plainly if the numbers do not stack up for your roof.
One day on site for a standard system, two if there is a battery and a lot of cable routing through a terrace. Scaffolding goes up the day before. From survey to switch-on is typically two to four weeks, mainly waiting on NIE Networks approval for larger systems.
Yes. We are a Tesla Energy Certified Installer and fit Powerwall 3, as well as Dyness and Soluna batteries. Batteries matter in the city because most households are out during the day when the panels are generating.
Us. The office in Newtownards picks up and the people who fitted your system come out. Our Google reviews mention that aftercare more than anything else.
