Derry has a wide mix of homes: 1960s to 1980s semis and terraces in estates like Ballymagroarty, Galliagh and Kilfennan, newer developments in Culmore, Eglinton and Prehen, and detached houses out towards Claudy, Limavady and Strabane. Most of them have a roof that suits solar well. Housing stock. The older estates on both sides of the Foyle tend to have simple two-pitch roofs that take 8 to 12 panels cleanly. The newer builds in Culmore, Eglinton and Prehen often have hipped roofs with several smaller faces, where we split the array across two faces and use optimisers so one shaded panel does not pull the rest down. Detached and rural homes out towards Claudy and Limavady usually have room for 14 to 20 panels.
Batteries and EVs. Many Derry households are out during the day when the panels are generating. A battery holds that daytime generation for the evening, which is where the real saving is. We fit Tesla Powerwall 3, Dyness and Soluna batteries sized from your actual bills, and EV chargers that charge from surplus solar first.
Planning. Rooftop solar on a house is permitted development in Northern Ireland, so most Derry homes need no application. Listed buildings always need consent, and inside the Walls or in the Clarendon Street conservation area a roof facing the street usually needs an application to Derry City and Strabane District Council. We check your address before we quote.
Grid connection. NIE Networks covers Derry. A standard home system up to 3.68kW per phase is connected with a notification after the install; anything larger, including most battery installs, needs an application approved first. We submit it and do not book the install until it is back. Rural addresses out towards Claudy, Park and Dungiven can be at the end of long lines where NIE limit export, in which case a battery keeps the energy in the house.
Donegal and Inishowen. We are often asked. We install in Northern Ireland only, as the grid connection and certification schemes are different in the Republic, so if you are in Muff or Bridgend we are not the right installer for you, but we are happy to point you in the right direction.

Yes. Panels generate from daylight rather than direct sun, and a south or west-facing roof in Derry produces within a few percent of the same roof in Belfast. Roof orientation and whether you add a battery make far more difference than which part of Northern Ireland you are in.
